For 55 years, D&R Custom Steel has fabricated equipment for projects across North America. From municipal water and wastewater infrastructure to industrial processing systems and specialized stainless steel equipment, our work has travelled thousands of kilometres from the shop floor to project sites throughout Canada and the United States.
While the industries we serve continue to evolve, one thing has remained consistent: our roots. D&R was founded in Ontario in 1971 and has grown alongside Canadian manufacturing, investing in skilled trades, advanced fabrication capabilities, and long term customer relationships. As we celebrate another Canada Day and look ahead to the next chapter of our company, it is a natural opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a Canadian manufacturer operating on a North American scale.
Manufacturing Beyond Borders
Manufacturing has changed significantly since D&R was founded in 1971. Technology has advanced, projects have become more complex, and customer expectations continue to evolve. Yet one thing remains consistent: strong manufacturing depends on skilled people, continuous investment, and a willingness to adapt.
Over the years, D&R has invested in equipment, facilities, training, apprenticeship programs, and process improvements that allow us to remain competitive while continuing to grow. Those investments are not only investments in the company. They are investments in Canadian manufacturing capability, and the future Bowmanville facility is the latest example of that commitment. While the building itself is important, what it represents is even more significant: confidence in the future of manufacturing, confidence in skilled trades, and confidence in the next generation of workers who will continue building Canada’s industrial capacity.
The People Behind the Work
When people think about manufacturing, they often think about equipment, machinery, and production. What is sometimes overlooked are the people behind it: the welders, fitters, apprentices, project managers, machinists, inspectors, and support staff who contribute their expertise every day. The suppliers, contractors, educators, and community partners who help support the industry. The customers who trust Canadian manufacturers with increasingly complex projects.
At D&R, many employees have spent decades building careers in the trades. Others are just beginning their journey. Together, they represent something that has always been one of Canada’s greatest strengths: skilled people who take pride in doing quality work.

Looking Ahead
Earlier this year, D&R officially held the groundbreaking ceremony for its future Bowmanville facility. It was an exciting moment, not simply because construction had begun, but because it represented the continuation of a story that started 55 years ago. A story built on hard work, skilled trades, customer trust, and a commitment to continuous improvement. As we celebrate this Canada Day, we are grateful for the employees, customers, partners, suppliers, and communities that have been part of that journey.
